Total System Profitability with Hypor’s Genetics for Hutterite Colonies

Five farrow-to-finish Hutterite colonies are weaning nearly 30 piglets per sow each year using the Hypor Libra* sow and Hypor Magnus boar. “We had to cut back on the number of sows because they were having so many pigs and weaning so many,” says Millerdale Hutterite Colony hog producer George Junior.

Hypor sows are known for their excellent milk production and for consistently producing litters with large numbers of uniform pigs. The high milk production and uniformity ensures that pigs get off to a good start and perform better later in life.

“Every year, our customers in the Hutterite colonies wean more and more pigs,” says Hypor Sales Representative Garret Weber. Big Stone Colony in Minnesota, Fairview and Spring Creek Colony of North Dakota, and Millerdale East and Millerdale West Colonies in South Dakota are weaning nearly 30 pigs per sow each year.

“Each of these colonies have detailed sow records that they use to track the genetic progress that they make each year,” Weber explains. “They’re very good managers and they’ve seen a huge improvement in Total System Profitability.”

Most notably, the colonies have seen an improvement in feed conversion and efficiency, as well as sow longevity and the number of pigs weaned:

Feed Efficiency: Pork producers have commented that the Hypor Magnus boar produces finishers that reach market weight in fewer days. The Hypor Magnus boar is the leading terminal boar in North America for growth rate.

Sow Longevity: Pork producers have noted that the Hypor Libra* breeds back easily and stays in the herd longer due to her sound feet and legs. The Hypor Libra* is developed to produce large litters of piglets and remain productive throughout her entire life span.

Number of Pigs Weaned: Pork producers’ say that their farm records show that the Hypor Libra* produces larger litters of uniform pigs, and that they have higher numbers of quality pigs going to market. The number of uniform pigs weaned is an example of Hypor’s approach to balanced breeding.

“Hypor believes that the best animal is the animal that is good in every area,” Weber says. He explains that by balancing characteristics, such as litter size and uniformity, Hypor is able provide genetics that maximize profitability.

In addition to producing balanced genetics, Hypor believes in providing support service after the sale to ensure pork producers are reaching maximum results. Whether its genetics, nutrition or marketing, Hypor’s technical team has the resources to provide solutions to individual production concerns.

“Pork producers are hard workers and it’s crucial that they have pigs that are producing to their market potential,” he says. “Hypor genetics are developed to be the best in every area of production––and Hypor staff are trained to ensure that producers achieve these results.”
