Dam line genes: it’s in your hands!

Hypor, the swine brand of Hendrix Genetics, recognizes the different needs of producers, including dam line gene delivery. With this in mind, Hypor offers unique solutions to establish and maintain a productive parent stock (Hypor Libra) population on your farm with the biosecurity level desired.

The purebred dam lines, Hypor Large White and Hypor Landrace, have been developed for crossbreeding to produce the Hypor Libra. Utilizing a balanced breeding approach to incorporate reproductive efficiency, piglet quality, and finishing traits creates the well-rounded Hypor Libra, which fits in any system. Depending on the desired level of biosecurity, there are also several options to have these purebred dam lines on your farm to produce the Hypor Libra. This can either be a BioHypor system, EasyHypor system, or purchase of purebreds.

BioHypor

The BioHypor system offers the winning combination of excellent biosecurity and excellent genetic progress. This system was originally introduced in 1994 and today there are many BioHypor systems in production worldwide. Clients using the BioHypor system will have access to the top genes, data exchange with the Hypor database, enhanced biosecurity, and access to our global technical team.

The BioHypor system works as a mini-nucleus (purebreds) established inside a client production system. After an initial fill of purebred gilts, the client system is closed to live animal entry. New genes enter only via fresh purebred semen from a Hypor Gene Transfer Centre. These purebred gilts are used to maintain the purebred population and are also crossed to produce the Hypor Libra (parent stock).

With direct connection to the Hypor database, breeding recommendations are provided to the client, outlining which animals are best suited for purebred or crossbred matings. Regardless, top semen from the Hypor gene transfer centers is used, bringing top genes to the parent stock level faster.

A closed system allows for the most enhanced biosecurity practices when there is no live animal entry. A closed system may also be appropriate where there is a large distance between the client and Hypor farms, making regular live animal entry difficult and expensive. BioHypor Clients also have direct access to our global technical team, including genetic services, and also technical production support.

EasyHypor

The EasyHypor system offers the combination of excellent biosecurity and good genetic progress. This system is best suited for clients that would like to have a closed system, but not have direct connection with the Hypor database. Clients using the EasyHypor system will have access to top genes, enhanced biosecurity, and our technical team.

The EasyHypor system is established through an initial entry of gilts and then the farm is closed to entry of live animals. New genes enter only via fresh purebred semen from a Hypor gene transfer centre or an authorized Hypor distributor. This system requires less administration for the client and will result in slightly slower genetic progress because there is no connection to the database.

A closed system allows for the most enhanced biosecurity practices when there is no live animal entry. A closed system may also be appropriate where there is a large distance between the client and Hypor farms, making regular live animal entry difficult and expensive.

Gilt Purchase

Purchasing purebred dam lines gives producers the flexibility to produce their own Hypor Libra on farm, without necessarily having to produce replacement purebreds on-farm. This type of gene delivery requires an open system, where high health purebred gilts regularly enter the farm. This option is best suited for clients located relatively close to a Hypor nucleus barn, where purebred gilts can be purchased and shipped on a regular basis.

New genes will enter with each new arrival of gilts, as well as with the semen used to create the Hypor Libra (parent stock). This system does not offer the same biosecurity advantage of a closed system, however with the proper gilt quarantine/acclimation, isolated farm location, and other biosecurity protocols, this option ensures good genetic progress. Clients are in the driver’s seat for Hypor Libra gilt selection, deciding which will best fit into their system.

So if you would like to produce your own Hypor Libra (parent stock) on-farm, Hypor has options to suit different client needs. Contact your local sales representative today to learn more!
