Using JuvenileIGF-I Measures In Pig Breeding Programs
IGF-1 levels in Hypor boar lines

Hypor has sampled pigs from several boar lines and assayed them for IGF-1 levels. IGF-1 (Insulin Growth Factor 1) is known as a growth factor and is closely involved in protein synthesis and muscle differentiation. Potential effects on feed intake, back fat and feed efficiency are reported. IGF-1 levels and performance testing figures of four different Hypor boar lines were analyzed and links between IGF-1 and performance figures were analyzed. Laboratory analysis has been done by Primegro and analysis has been done in close cooperation with Kim Bunter of University of New England, Armidale, Australia. Within nucleus farms there was a clear significant difference in IGF-1 levels between boar lines.

Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit, University of New England
The Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit was established in 1976 by the New South Wales State Department of Agriculture and the University of New England to carry out research, development and training in the genetic improvement of livestock for the benefit of Australian agriculture. From a small beginning of two scientists, one extension specialist and one secretary, it has grown to a team of 20 scientists, postgraduate students and support staff. It has an excellent international reputation and as a consequence, an active program of visiting scientists.
